Drunken man bare chested outside station

A drunken man stood bare chested outside Lurgan police station and later urinated in a cell after he was arrested, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Wednesday.

He was 23-year-old John McMullan, Turmoyra Court, Lurgan, and he admitted disorderly behaviour and unlawful damage to the cell on October 13.

The court heard that at approximately 1.20am police saw two males fighting in William Street.

The defendant, who was under the influence of alcohol, said he had been assaulted.

Around 15 minutes later while police were dealing with another incident McMullan, who was bare chested, began singing loudly. He was warned about his behaviour.

At 2.45am he was outside the gates of the police station with no shirt on. He was aggressive and was shouting.

His father tried to take him home but he jumped out of the vehicle and ran towards the police station.

The defendant continued to shout and swear and was arrested for disorderly behaviour.

In custody he was initially compliant but became aggressive and urinated in a cell after he was warned not to.

Mr Conor Downey, representing the defendant, said McMullan had a large amount of alcohol taken and this played a major part.

He added that his client was embarrassed by his behaviour.

Having been given the opportunity to make his way home he had returned to the police station.

Mr Downey said McMullan that a suspended sentence had just lapsed prior to this incident.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said it was only just out of time and he felt community service was the proper disposal.

As well as the community service he ordered McMullan to pay £12 compensation for damage to the cell.
