Duchess comment retracted

AN SDLP candidate in tomorrow’s Derry City Council elections has retracted his description of the Duchess of Cambridge as “pure stinkin’’ saying he actually thinks Catherine Middleton is a “very beautiful young woman.”

The SDLP’s response came after the Londonderry Sentinel was sent a ‘screen grab’ of the comment on Mr Carr’s private Facebook account and forwarded a copy to the nationalist party.

On Facebook he had posted “yer woman kate middleton is pure stinkin.’”

A spokesperson for the SDLP said: “This comment was completely in jest in response to a friend’s comment on a Facebook page, which only has private access.

“In fact, Mr (James) Carr actually believes that Kate Middleton is a beautiful young woman and that she was simply stunning on her wedding day.

“Mr Carr has since removed the comment as there was absolutely no offence intended to either his friend on Facebook or anyone else.”

The comment came to light when a Sentinel reader contacted the paper outraged at the Shantallow candidate’s slur on the Baroness of Carrickfergus.

Mr Carr will contest the Shantallow ward in tomorrow’s Derry City Council elections alongside party colleagues Colum Eastwood, Shaun Gallagher and Angela Dobbins.

He will be running against Tony Hasson, Elisha McLaughlin and Sandra Duffy of Sinn Féin, Martin McMonagle of the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) and independent candidate Pauline Mellon.
