Duddy calls for more enforcment on St Patrick's Day

A Coleraine councillor says that more Council enforcement officers should be on duty over holiday periods like St Patrick's Day and Easter weekend.

The DUP man was speaking at last week’s Environmental Services committee meeting, when he raised the issue of on street drinking in Portstewart.

“I know last year we had difficulty with young people drinking on the street in Portstewart on St Patrick’s Day,” he said.

“How many officers are we deploying,” he asked.

In response, Council Director Aiden McPeak said that the on street drinking by laws were enforced by the police, and that that the PSNI had ‘no major concerns’ ahead of the celebrations later this month.

Mr McPeak went on to say that enforcement officers, for litter and dog fouling would be on duty over the Easter weekend, but not on St Patrick’s Day.
