Dumped tyres are a major countryside eyesore

Ten tyres dumped on the roadside and, of course, no one knows who and exactly when it happened except by the person or persons who did it.

The tyres were photographed by a Times reader who sent us the picture commenting that it was another example of reckless fly-tipping that was blighting parts of the countryside.

The caller said: “It’s obvious these tyres weren’t put there for later collection. They just looked abandoned with an empty carton that held beer cans thrown in the middle of them.”

He added: “Unfortunately people don’t pay any heed to health and safety or the environment. I only hope that whoever did it is caught and dealt with by the authorities.”

The Mayor of Ballymoney, Alderman Bill Kennedy, said it was a pathetic way of dealing with unwanted items.

He continued: “Tyres cost money to dispose of and whoever did this obviously didn’t want to go through the proper procedure.

“As a council we are trying to keep the environment clean and safe and while these tyres pose no chemical risk unless they are burned, it is breaking the law and causes a real eyesore.

“If anyone knows anything about who is dumping these or has heard any information about where they have come from they should contact the council’s Environmental department as soon as possible as it’s our environment which is being destroyed.”

There are clearly defined rules on the dumping of waste material and anyone found in breach of those rules are liable to prosecution.
