Richie spoke to the TIMES as he embarked on a UK and Irish tour, which ends with his gig at Lulu’s on February 14.

The drummer, once described as ‘the best thing to happen to The Ramones’ when he joined the band at a critical point in their musical journey during the 1980s, says he won’t have much time to travel and enjoy Northern Ireland while he is here, but is looking forward to sampling the “local flavor” and “talking with all the fans”.

Richie said of his decision to play Dungannon: “I wanted to do an intimate Valentines Day show and my agent lives in this town. I have never played Lulu’s but heard it is a great club.”

Asked about his own musical influences, he said: “Growing up I listened to all kinds of music which is important in developing your musical talent. As a drummer, I was influenced by Buddy Rich and John Bonham.”

On the description afforded to him by The Ramones’ lead vocalist Joey Ramone, cited above, Richie was extremely humble in his response:“It is an honor for anyone to say that about you, especially the Ramones. Joey was so inspirational and pushed me to write and sing songs. I couldn’t ask for anything nicer to be said about me.”

Richie Ramone also had some advice for young and aspiring musicians: “You must work hard at your craft and be persistent. As far as drumming....practice, practice and practice some more. If you put the time in you can really get ahead of the pack. There are so many bands now that you must have something extra special to stick out. If you love what you do, then chase your dream and be realistic. There will be many bumps in the road....peace”
