Dungiven teenager stopped police and asked to check if their tyres were legal

Daryl McCloskey, aged 19, of Garvagh Road was sentenced for the offence of disorderly behaviour at Limavady Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The court heard on April 19, at 6.50pm, police were driving on Main Street in Limavady when they were flagged down by McCloskey and another male.

Police stopped and and the other male said: “Taxi to Drumsurn Road”.

The police officer shook his head.

The court heard it was a sunny evening and the area was busy.

McCloskey then shouted: “Let me see them f***ing tyres. They better be f***ing legal.”

Police parked up and spoke with the co-accused while McCloskey was located in a nearby taxi office. He was in the back of the taxi office, and refused to come out and was shouting and swearing. Eventually McCloskey came out from the back and was arrested, the court heard.

Defence solicitor Paddy McGurk said McCloskey “let his mouth run away from him”.

Mr McGurk said McCloskey “does attract some police attention” and “he needs to learn how to deal with these situations a wee bit more diplomatically”.

District Judge Liam McNally said the offence was “at the lower end of the scale”.

McCloskey was bound over for two years in the sum of £500.
