Dunmurry homes left without power

Over 1,500 homes and businesses in the Upper Dunmurry Lane and Blacks Road areas of Dunmurry were left without electricity on Wednesday May 28 following contractor damage to a high voltage underground cable.

The incident happened as a contractor working on the telecoms network hit and damaged an electricity cable.

Power supplies were interrupted at 2pm and NIE emergency crews responded immediately, assessing the damage and restoring electricity to the majority of customer within an hour.

Remaining customers were put back on supply by 3.30pm.

Valerie Curran, NIE Customer Relations Manager for the area said:, “The contractor did have mark up drawings of the live underground electricity network on site but did not follow the correct safety procedures to avoid them. This could have resulted in injury, or even death for those working on site.”
