The Belfast Metropolitan College student was a lucky recipient of the Belfast Met Trust’s annual Scholarship Scheme and received financial funding from the Trust to enable him to take part in a week-long music development programme at the Zêzere Arts Festival of Opera, Song and Singing in Portugal.

With the Trust’s assistance, the training classical singer and professional violinist travelled to the European country this month to participate in an intensive summer course for advanced singers, culminating in a festival of public musical performances.

Christopher will work with a team of highly experienced music directors, pianists and opera directors to help develop his talents and prepare for the programme of shows during the festival.

The 21 year old, who recently completed his Grade 8 qualifications in violin and singing, has been playing the violin since he was five years old and recently taught himself to play guitar.

Already an accomplished performer, counting the Ulster Hall, Waterfront and London’s Albert Hall amongst the venues he has performed in, Christopher is well on his way to reaching his goal of becoming a professional classical singer.

“I was absolutely delighted to receive the scholarship from Belfast Met Trust, as I realise it is a very competitive scheme with high volumes of students applying for support,” said Christopher.

“I believe that the summer course in Zêzere will be a fantastic learning opportunity for me and will give me great insight into the career of professional singers.

“I am thankful to Belfast Met Trust for providing me with the opportunity to develop my skills beyond the normal course of study,” concluded Christopher

Marie-Thérèse McGivern, Principal and Chief Executive of Belfast Metropolitan College, added: “Through Belfast Met’s scholarship scheme, we award talented, committed students with a passion for excellence in their chosen field and a desire to gain additional experience beyond their normal course of study.

“With the Trust’s financial support, each scholarship student is able to develop and enhance their experience and ability, which in turn helps to build a highly skilled workforce in Northern Ireland,” she concluded.
