“I’m pleased to have been elected and will endeavour to serve all the citizens,” he said.

Outgoing chair Pearse McAleer of Sinn Fein said he has had the privilege of being chairman of Cookstown District Council on several occasions and added that he was glad he’d saved the most rewarding until last.

“As a Council, we have always prided ourselves on being at the fore of development and progress, always moving forward, rather than being led,” he said.

And he added: “As we approach the end of Cookstown District Council and the beginning of the new Mid-Ulster council, as outgoing chairman, I feel a tremendous sense of pride, knowing that we hand over to the new council, a significant and impressive portfolio of assets and projects that will ensure the Mid-Ulster council has a firm base for taking this District forward.”
