DUP man infirework plea

DUP Alderman Maurice Devenney has warned of the danger posed by Hallowe’en fireworks after reports of injuries to young men in Londonderry and Belfast.

Last week a schoolboy from Londonderry was injured when a firework was thrown over a wall in Rosemount.

And at the weekend it was reported that 23-year-old north Belfast man, Collum Kelly, was injured after a firework was thrown at him. It’s feared Mr Kelly could lose the sight of one of his eyes as a result of the mindless incident.

Last year the Western Trust was the only area in Northern Ireland to experience an increase in Hallowe’en fireworks injuries - spiking from five to seven and accounting for 28 per cent of all injuries reported across Northern Ireland.

Mr Devenney said it was incumbent on everyone to be vigilant and aware of the dangers posed by fireworks.

“I would ask people coming up to Hallowe’en to be very careful and aware of the damage that fireworks can cause when they are being handled by people who aren’t experienced,” he commented.

People need to be aware of the dangers as has been shown by the incident in Belfast and recent incidents in Londonderry.”
