DUP raise concerns on slave trade

A DUP delegation has met with police to discuss a number of major issues in the Craigavon borough area. The delegation consisted of Upper Bann MP David Simpson, Sydney Anderson MLA and Councillor Jonathan Buckley.

Concerns about drugs and modern day slavery across the local area were raised. In recent weeks a number of people were rescued as a result of a major police crackdown on human trafficking.

Following the meeting David Simpson MP said, “Along with my colleagues we held a very worthwhile and informative meeting with the PSNI to raise specific issues of concern in Upper Bann. We are all too aware of the problems we face regarding modern day slavery and drugs. Both of which are damaging the livelihoods and potential careers of our talented young people. I can assure the community that this is an issue we won’t back down from and at all levels of authority we will do what we can to eradicate this issue from society.

“In terms of human trafficking; I commend the work of the PSNI for using their gathered information to bring about the rescue of victims of human trafficking in recent weeks. However, I feel more needs to be done at a legislative level to bring about tougher action against those responsible for facilitating this crime.”
