DUP MLA Maurice Bradley and the MP for the area, Gregory Campbell, have been in contact with the PSNI in relation to Republican flags in Kilrea.

MLA Bradley said: “In response to constituents who have been in direct contact with my office, I have been speaking with PSNI officers and have been informed that negotiations are on-going between community representatives. It is hoped that a resolution can be found.

“It is worth noting that the PSNI has no powers in relation to flags, posters or banners or anything similar on lamposts, this falls under the remit of the Department of Infrastructure, who, have so far, failed to take responsibility for their property.

“Last Thursday evening, PSNI officers acting on information, initiated extra patrols in the Kilrea area. However, within minutes of these patrols being stood down, individuals arrived in Kilrea and proceeded to put more flags up. I remain in contact with the PSNI on this matter along with colleague Gregory Campbell MP who has also made representations to the PSNI.”

East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell added: “This incident along with other dissident republican leafletting in Limavady and the deplorable bomb attack on the police officer and her child near Dungiven have given rise to growing worries that there are people intent on raising tensions in County Londonderry.

“I have written to police outlining my concerns and asking what steps are being taken in Kilrea with community leaders to have these offensive banners, posters etc removed so that the good community relations that have existed in the town are restored.”
