DUP selection meeting

THE DUP in Londonderry is to hold a meeting this week to select its candidate for the Foyle constituency in the forthcoming Westminster elections.

Senior party member, Jeffrey Donaldson will chair the meeting, to be held in the DUP offices on Ebrington Terrace at 7.30pm tomorrow evening (Thursday).

A party spokesman said Mr Donaldson will answer members’ questions on the current political situation.

“He will also encourage members and get the party ready for the election in Foyle. We see this as an important election for unionism in Foyle.

“We see this coming down to alienation of Protestants in this city. This is an opportunity for unionists to come out and indicate that unionism is very much alive,” added the spokesman.

The spokesman said that the party had been able to galvanise opposition to Derry City Council’s proposal to change the city’s name, which was a major issue locally.

He added: “We were able to rally people together to oppose the name change and the attempt to strip them of their Britishness.

“An election is always an opportunity for unionists to register their very strong voice.”

All members are urged to go along to tomorrow night’s meeting.
