Durkan backs children’s literacy drive

LONDONDERRY’S MP Mark Durkan has pledged his support for libraries in the city in their efforts to improve children’s literacy despite budget cuts.

He endorsed The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge which this year has the highest rate of involvement ever. Ninety seven per cent of library authorities in Northern Ireland are participating and over 760,000 children are due to join in.

Mr Durkan said: “I would urge families in Derry – if they haven’t already done so – to join their local library during the summer holidays and take part in this excellent programme.

“The Summer Reading Challenge has a proven impact on children’s literacy and enjoyment of reading.

“Research carried out by the UK Literacy Association shows that participating in the Challenge combats the ‘summer holiday dip’ in pupils’ reading motivation and attainment, widens pupils’ reading range and repertoire and boosts their desire to read at home. It is important to continue lobbying government to protect programmes and resources like The Summer Reading Challenge which are aimed at delivering the best start in life for all children.”
