Durkan welcomes Republic drink-driving move

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has welcomed yesterday's passing of the Road Traffic Bill in Dáil Éireann which will see the alcohol limit for drivers in the Irish Republic reduced from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg.

Mr Durkan signed a Commons motion this week calling for a similar reduction in the drink-drive limit and has also lobbied the Environment Minister Edwin Poots to take an all-island approach to curb drink-driving.

He said: "I welcome the passing of this Bill in Dil ireann which will see a reduction in the drink-driving limit in the South.

"While I recognise that the vast majority of people do not drink and drive, it is apparent that an irresponsible minority on our roads are causing accidents and destroying lives.

"I have consistently called for an all-island approach to curb drink-driving so that our roads are safer for all road users.

"I have also encouraged the Department of Environment to work with its Southern counterparts in taking forward a simultaneous decision on this matter.

"I would therefore encourage the Environment Minister to bring forward amendments to the current legislation here in the North without further delay."
