Dusk til dawn Peace Camp at Downhill Beach this week

AS The Coleraine Times revealed earlier this Downhill Beach is to host a Peace Camp as part of London 2012’s Cultural Olympiad Programme.

Managed by a London based company, Artichoke, the Peace Camp is free to attend and will run dusk til dawn (9.30pm to 5.30am) from Thursday, July 19 to Sunday, July 22 Inspired by the Olympic Truce, the roots of which date back to Ancient Greece, renowned director Deborah Warner and actor Fiona Shaw have created an extraordinary art installation encircling the UK.

The Peace Camp will be one of eight murmuring, glowing encampments appearing simultaneously at some of the UK’s most beautiful and remote coastal locations, ranging from Co Antrim to the tip of Cornwall, from the Isle of Lewis to the Sussex cliffs.

Designed to be visited between dusk and dawn, Peace Camp is a poignant exploration of love poetry and a celebration of the extraordinary variety and beauty of our coastline.

Downhill Beach will host an encampment of hundreds of tents, lit up with sound and music throughout the night.

The beach will have restricted access when entering under the bridge as the eastern end closest to Mussenden Temple will not be available for general use up to July 26.

The Peace Camp will be located to the right hand side underneath the cliffs at Mussenden Temple. Visitors can continue to park and use the beach on the left hand side of the entrance.
