Dust off your treasures! Ancient swords and high crosses coming to history roadshow in Killeeshil

Killeeshil and Clonaneese Historical Society are also calling on the public to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by local historians and experts.

The cross-community history society has already unearthed some amazing finds including a pair of swords that had been stashed away in a thatched roof for centuries, RIC and World War 11 memorabilia, and fragments of an early Christian cross, dating from the 9th Century, which were found close to the site of St Paul’s Church, Killeeshil.

The valuable stone pieces, which were located by the Reverend Bert Ingram in 1975 in the graveyard boundary of the church, are currently on loan to the society.

There will also be historical maps, war albums, old pottery, clay pipes, and other household and outdoor items on display.

“The roadshow will be the first of this type of event to be held in this area, and we are looking forward to see what turns up”, said a spokesperson for the society.

“There is a lot of history hidden away and gathering dust in attics, sheds and old drawers. If anyone has or thinks they might have something of historical note it would be fantastic if they could bring them along to show to our experts.

“Even the most humble looking object could turn out to have a fascinating history or riveting story attached to it.

“We are looking forward to welcoming everyone who attends and to hear their accounts. It should be a great afternoon out for all the family.”

Boosted by the opening of the history centre at Killymaddy in 2014, the society has had great success bringing the area’s past to life.

The roadshow will take place on Saturday 28th November 2015 from 12 noon to 4pm, at Killymaddy Centre.

Entry fee is £3 with refreshments served.
