Early retirement for well-known GP

Dr Alan Hamilton has recently retired from General Practice at Wynne Hill Surgery in Lurgan.

Having fallen seriously ill with viral pneumonia, in October 2010, he has been unable to return to his demanding duties as a full-time GP. As a result he has been forced into early retirement.

Dr Hamilton attended King’s Park Primary School and Coleraine Academical Institution, before qualifying as a doctor from Queen’s University Belfast in 1982. He then worked in Craigavon Area Hospital for three years before training as a GP.

He took up his post in General Practice in 1989, the same year the practice moved from Church Place to its present site on Hill Street.

For most of the last 25 years he has served his patients in Lurgan and the surrounding area.

Dr Hamilton would like to take this opportunity to thank his many patients for allowing him the privilege of looking after them individually and as families over all those years. He also would like to put on record his thanks to all the nursing, reception and ancillary staff who helped him achieve that aim.

His family marked the occasion by presenting him with a vintage doctor’s case. More recently, he can be often found in the High Street, where his wife Edith is the owner of Vintage & Value and her son, David Patterson is the manager of Patterson Music.

Dr Hamilton has two children - Ashleigh (27) and Richard (25) - who are both following in his footsteps as doctors.
