Easter finish for Peace Bridge

LONDONDERRY'S iconic Peace Bridge is now expected to be completed by April of next year.

The 13.2m foot and cycle bridge was due to be opened by Christmas but construction problems have forced the estimated completion date back until Easter. However, despite the delay, it's understood that the project will be completed within budget.

Engineer Kenny Graham, of Grahams Construction, said that the company had difficulty finding a foundation for the structure on the River Foyle's west bank.

"There was a void that wasn't marked on the services map we were working from so it was an unforeseen problem. But between the designers and ourselves we resolved the problem by filling the void with grout and using different piles," he said.

"We now expect to be completed around Easter," he added.

Mr Graham also confirmed that the bridge sections are expected to be laid during a seven day period between September 10 and 17. The major operation will see the arrival of the colossal floating crane, the Mersey Mammoth.
