Eco Schools Flag for Ballyhackett

BALLYHACKETT Primary School has been rewarded the prestigious Eco Schools Green Flag.

Eco-Schools is an international environmental award programme. Over the last few years Ballyhackett has been following a simple seven-step process which helps to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity.

The children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school.

Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the children who decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it.

Schools work towards gaining awards – bronze, silver and the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolizes excellence in the field of environmental activity.

Eco-Schools co-ordinator, Miss Grainne Mullan, said: “We have been working very hard on various environmental projects and are absolutely delighted that our hard work has been recognised and we have been awarded the green flag”.
