Edenderry pupils get set for Fun Run

SCHOOLCHILDREN from Edenderry PS are putting their best foot forward in preparation for the Spar Bann 10K and Fun Run next week.

The pupils learned top tips from local up-and-coming athlete Emma Mitchell who, alongside development officers from Athletics NI, gave a taster session ahead of the event on Wednesday May 19.

Emma, who set new records at the district inter-schools athletics championships, said, “I am delighted to be here today in my local town to talk about athletics and take part in the ambassador master class programme.

“I won my first medal at the Banbridge Town Sports Day and have enjoyed competing in athletics since then. I will be taking part in the Spar Fun Run on May 19 and look forward to seeing all the children from the local primary schools in the area coming along and taking part,” she added.

Edenderry PS pupil Emma Cousins won the official race t-shirt competition and her design will be unveiled on the day.

Spar Banbridge Assistant Manager Melissa Tolerton said, “The SPAR Banbridge 10k is part of the SPAR Grand Prix 10k series that encourages healthy, active lifestyles within the community.

“The ambassador athletic master class programme taught the children and teachers to ‘get into your stride’ through the mechanism of athletics. It was great to see the kids taking advantage of the good weather and enjoying the athletics class.

“This has showcased running as fun and healthy with many of them preparing for the Spar Banbridge 4k fun run.”

Athletic Northern Ireland’s race director Heather Martin invited people from across the district to support the event.

“It is great to see the children getting involved in the master class programme and I hope many of them will come along and take part or support the event which is taking place in the next two weeks,” she said.
