Edmund Rice boys do their bit to help earthquake victims

PUPILS from Edmund Rice College have responded to the ongoing Haiti Disaster by raising over £1,000.

Organising teacher Mrs Mary McGuigan said that the boys were very conscious of the effects of the disaster and wanted to play their part in raising funds.

“Not only have we raised money from our non-uniform day and cake sale, but we have also donated all the proceeds from our school show to the disaster fund,” she said.

The boys presented a cheque for 1,000 to Siobhan Scullion of Trocaire, who praised the boys for their efforts and promised that the money would be used immediately.

“Trocaire have people on the ground in Haiti, providing immediate relief in the form of clean water, food, hygiene kits, medical supplies and shelter,” said Siobhan.

“Importantly though, we will also continue for the next number of years in the area, supporting the rebuilding of the social infrastructure and helping to build sustainable communities.”

Edmund Rice Principal Kevin Gough said he was very proud of the boys and not at all surprised by their generosity.

“For many years we have had a tradition of fundraising for those less fortunate than ourselves, whether far away or nearer to home. Once again, the boys have shown us that they are a credit to themselves, their school and their community.”
