Education Minister opens new Scoil na Fuiseoige

EDUCATION Minister, John O’Dowd, has officially opened new £1.68 million facilities for Scoil na Fuiseoige.

The new primary is built on the existing extended school site and is a modern new build five classroom school.

The school, which was previously housed in prefabricated mobiles, has long campaigned for a new building for the growing school.

Scoil na Fuiseoige opened as an independent school in 1992 and became a satellite unit of Bunscoil Phobal Feirste in 1994.

The school subsequently became grant-aided in 1997 and caters for pupils from Poleglass and Lagmore, as well as Twinbrook.

Speaking during the opening event, the Minister said: “I am honoured to have been invited by Scoil na Fuiseoige to perform the official opening of the school’s fantastic new premises.

“My Department has invested more than £1.68 million in the new facilities, which will enable the school to move from strength to strength as it approaches its third decade providing education through the medium of Irish to young people in the local area.”

He continued: “Irish-medium education is flourishing right across the north of Ireland and is more popular than ever.

“I am committed to ensuring that parents here continue to have the choice to educate their children in what is our native language.

“Children who are bilingual from a young age have a strong foundation for future learning in any subject, and often pick up other languages with ease.”

The Minister concluded: “I would like to thank all of those involved with the construction of the new school and wish all the pupils, staff, Governors and everyone connected with the school every success as they look to the future.”
