Election debate was ‘a huge success’

An election debate, which was held last week in Legacurry Presbyterian Church, has been hailed as a “huge success”.

The debate involved several candidates including Cllr Alexander Redpath (Ulster Unionist), Cllr Pat Catney, (SDLP), Mr Trevor Lunn MLA (Alliance) and Mr Jeffrey Donaldson (DUP).

The debate was organised by the Evangelical Alliance and moderated by David Smyth Public Policy Office for the Evangelical Alliance.

Speaking after the debate, UUP candidate Councillor Alexander Redpath, said: “I was delighted to take part in this debate and would like to thank the Evangelical Alliance for organising it. I would also like to thank Legacurry Presbyterian Church for offering the use of their halls. I believe the event was a huge success.

“I think it’s very important for candidates to make themselves available to answer questions from the public. We had a robust debate at the hustings event and were questions on issues ranging from health care to support for John Lewis. We also faced several questions on same sex marriage and right to life issues.

“It was an incredibly positive debate and I would like to thank the other candidates involved for their contributions. I have spelt out my priorities for the election. These are protecting services at the Lagan Valley Hospital, supporting economic development at Sprucefield and the Maze site and campaigning for the full implementation of the military covenant in Northern Ireland.”

There are eight candidates standing locally in the general election next Thursday (May 7). The Lagan Valley candidates are Clrr Pat Catney (SDLP), Jeffrey Donaldson (DUP), Alan Love (UKIP), Trevor Lunn MLA (Alliance), Jacqui McGeough (SF), Samuel Morrison (TUV), Jonny Orr (Independent), Helen Osborne (Conservative) and Cllr Alexander Redpath (Ulster Unionist).
