The canvass, which last took place in 2006, is being held to ensure that the electoral register is as comprehensive and accurate as possible in advance of elections scheduled to take place in 2014 and beyond.

Area Electoral Officer said the office is expecting in excess of 140,000 forms to be returned over the canvass period.

She said: “A fifth of the registration forms are being returned with missing information, so please make sure you have filled in your name, address, national insurance number, nationality, date of birth and ticked the residency box to confirm that you have lived in Northern Ireland for the past three months and finally, sign and date.

“Even if you have been on holiday or out of the country for any reason during the three months’ qualifying period you should still tick the ‘yes’ box”.

Guidance on how to complete the canvass is on the back of the form or you can call the helpline number 0800 4320 712.
