The Tandragee woman first started teaching at Lurgan Technical College and while ‘The Tech’ changed its named many times over the past 30 years the presence of Elizabeth Greer remained constant.

Now the Deputy Head of the School of Business and Computing at Southern Regional College, Elizabeth expressed her delight at receiving an MBE.

She said: “I am highly delighted and truly honoured to receive such a prestigious award and yet I feel very humbled and unworthy. All I ever sought to do was give of my best to help others.

“I’m very grateful for the honour of MBE and to whoever nominated me and those who supported the nomination.

“My faith inspired me to want to help others and my job affords me the opportunity and a platform to do this.”

Elizabeth said she knew she wanted to be a teacher from a very young age.

“On my first day at Clare Primary School the teacher led me into the classroom by the hand and I knew from that minute on I wanted to be a teacher.

“As a little girl I had an easel and chalk and used to give lessons to my poor brother, whether he liked it or not.”

She added: “I love my job at SRC and there is immense reward from seeing students, both young people and adults returning to education, coming into college, developing and progressing and leaving with additional qualifications and more confidence and then hearing about their achievements afterwards like achieving higher education, securing employment and gaining promotions. These demonstrate we do a worthwhile job.

“I see the MBE as an award for the Southern Regional College too, for without supportive senior management teams and colleagues, present and past, I would not have been able to achieve this.”

Elizabeth celebrated by going out for a meal with her brother William and his wife Caroline on Saturday night.
