Emma proves she is a cut above the rest

When Emma Smallwoods woke up this morning she knew it was a case of ‘hair today and gone tomorrow’ as she geared herself up for a trip to the hairdressers.

Earlier this year Emma, who is from Bramhall Crescent in Kilfennan, decided she wanted to cut off her lovely long hair in memory of her friend, Leah Whyte, who died in January after battling cancer.

She decided that she wanted to help the Little Princess Trust, which works to help children left bald by the effects of cancer treatment. Emma was delighted to learn that she had raised over £1,900 as she strolled into Colum Cooke’s hairdressing salon on Trench Road this morning, but when customers and staff realised what she was doing, a whip round pushed that total up a little further, and by the time she left the salon Emma was quite a bit closer to £2,000 for the charity.

Accompanied to Colum Cooke hairdressing by her sister Loren and her grandmother, Sandra Russell, Emma said she was excited about getting a new hairstyle just two days before her birthday.

It means Emma has funded the making or purchase of six wigs as well as providing enough hair for the Princess Trust to have another wig made.
