Employee wellbeing top of the business agenda

LISBURN City Council in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA) welcomed the Action Cancer Big Bus to the Lisburn business community as part of the ‘Invest in Health, Profit in Business’ initiative.

Research suggests that employee wellbeing and security should be top of the business agenda, in short healthy employees are more committed and committed employees are more healthy.

This commitment could represent one of the most important investments by business owners in managing the uncertain economic climate and fears regarding job security by demonstrating that they are serious about preparing their business and workforce for the longer term.

The Big Bus was located at a number of business parks around the city over a five day period offering local employees free MOT health checks and breast screening services.

Following his own MOT health check, the Mayor, Alderman Leathem said: “We welcome this visit from Action Cancer which reminds us of the importance of being aware of our health and of the positive steps that we can make towards a healthier lifestyle.”

Chair of the Council’s Economic Development Committee, Alderman Dillon commented: “I am delighted that there has been such a large turn out and local companies have made excellent use of Action Cancer’s Big Bus. Having this bus on site at these locations meant that it was accessible for companies to visit with employees having to take little time out of their working day.”

The Public Health Agency’s Chris Totten Head of Health and Wellbeing Improvement in the South Eastern Area said: “Workplaces represent an important setting that provide not just employment for an individual but one which can also encourage motivation, satisfaction, a sense of pride, purpose and identity, ultimately affecting an individual’s health and wellbeing and their quality of life. We are seeking with our partners to bring more information and screening opportunities to our local workplaces in the coming months. It is about businesses making a meaningful contribution to local communities.”
