Enchanting outdoor art project in Whitehead

Northern Ireland’s first Woollen Wood was officially opened at Diamond Jubilee Wood in Whitehead on Saturday afternoon.

Families took part in a packed programme of activities at the location hosted by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in collaboration with Voluntary Arts and Lighthouse Yarns, Whitehead.

Activities included arts and crafts such as pom-pom making, felting and origami while young environmentalists enjoyed bug hunting and pond dipping.

Alison Diver, MEA Growing Communities officer, said: “This is a fantastic project which has brought the arts and the environment together and we are pleased that so many people have gotten involved.

“The woollen creations include fruit, flowers, insects and birds and we even had a yarn bombed bicycle, a woolly clown and a woolly skeleton at the wood on Saturday

“The wonderful wool will be on display throughout the summer in Diamond Jubilee Wood, why not go and see for yourself?”

Woollen Woods is United Kingdom-wide project that began in 2013. Whitehead’s enchanting outdoor art installation features hundreds of woodland-themed woollen artworks which were created by schools, knitting groups and individuals all over the province.
