'˜End illegal dumping at Craigyhill bonfire site': DUP councillor

A Larne DUP councillor is calling for the council to tackle what she believes to be illegal dumping at the Craigyhill bonfire site.

Coast Road representative Angela Smyth says she has been contacted by “numerous residents” who have voiced their concerns at the state of the green which hosted the eleventh night pyre at Cairngorm Drive three weeks ago.

“I believe that there is a mixture of detritus from the eleventh night bonfire and newer material there which I think has been illegally dumped,” Cllr Smyth told the Times.

“When I visited the site on Monday (August 1) there were mattresses, glass, a lot of rubble and muck dumped there.

“This mound of rubbish is quite close to the back of the shops and car park.

“This is hazardous material; when I pulled into the car park there were a few spaces where you couldn’t park due to glass and the whole area needed to be brushed.

“The council has been very quick at clearing up other sites so I am talking to them to see why it’s not happening here.”

A council spokesperson told the Times that the bonfire site would be cleared by contractors “by lunch time tomorrow” (Wednesday August 3) and the the site had not been cleared sooner as the material had been “too hot.”
