Energy from Waste plant declared 'major planning application'

PLANS for a proposed Energy from Waste (EfW) gasification plant at the site of the old Burnhouse on the Moira Road have been declared as a "major application" under Article 31 of the Planning (NI) Order 1991.

The planners made the announcement this week after local people had expressed concerns about the scheme.

Local Councillor Jonathan Craig has welcomed the decision, which could result in a Public Inquiry.

"I welcome this announcement and believe the plan should go to a Public Inquiry" he said. "That will give residents a full opportunity to express their concerns about the application.

"This has been an animal meat processing plant for many years and residents have had to put up with terrible smells inflicted upon them.

The old Burnhouse closed at Christmas and residents have now been faced with this new proposal which they fear will essentially mean a continuation of the same problems.

"I therefore welcome the move by the Planning Service and fully support any Public Inquiry into the proposal as well as support the concerns of the many residents in the area."
