English and Maths rate improves at Lisneal College

Last year at the city’s main Protestant secondary school just 25 per cent of fifth years achieved five or more GCSEs.

But this has now increased to 38 per cent.

Furthermore, the percentage of pupils who achieved five or more GCSEs A* to C regardless of subject was 65 per cent this summer. This marked a stabilisation of this measure of achievement at the high to mid sixty per cent mark. In 2013, the figure was 68 per cent.

At A Level 58 per cent of Lisneal pupils achieved three or more GCSEs A* to C.

The results are part of what has been a continuing process of improvement at the Crescent Link school over the past several years.

School inspectors recently reported remarkable progress at Lisneal over the past five years following a fresh inspection in December.

The Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) review was the third at the city’s sole Controlled non-selective post-primary following a highly critical report’s conclusion in 2010 that in the majority of areas inspected, the quality of education provided by Lisneal College was inadequate.

However, that’s all changed. The latest ETI inspection found the overall quality of education was good.

The ETI inspection was another boon to the school following the major boost of leaving the formal intervention process last year.
