English classesoffered tomigrants

MIGRANT workers who speak English as an additional language are invited to apply for new local authority sponsored ‘Language and Local Awareness’ classes before this Friday, May 4.

Five courses, each running for 10 weeks, will run in the Spring and Autumn 2012.

A contract has been put in place with the North West Academy of English to run the English Language classes, with Council’s Community Relations Officers running the ‘Local Awareness’ element of the project.

Funding through the District Council’s Community Relations Programme means that the courses will cost only £10 per participant - a highly subsidised rate.

Local employers and communities are asked to help pass on the information to individuals resident in the Derry City Council area who might wish to benefit from this opportunity.

Council’s Community Relations Officer, Sue Divin, said: “We are really pleased to be able to organise this initiative again for 2012. The 2011 initiative had 81 participants from diverse backgrounds and excellent feedback - the extension of the initiative continues an excellent opportunity for individuals not only to overcome communication barriers but also enhance their awareness of local history and culture so that they can relate to the communities that they live in.”

Registration and further details on the courses are available through contacting Clare Heaney, Director of Studies at the North West Academy of English on Tel: 028 71 370773 or e-mail: [email protected]

Registration is currently open and will remain open until Friday, May 4, 2012.
