Enjoy borough's beauty

GET on your bike or lace up your walking shoes and enjoy the beauty of Craigavon through a variety of events organised by Craigavon Borough Council to celebrate National Trails Day.

Four walks and a cycle will all be taking place on Sunday, October 3, which will help members of the public to enjoy the beautiful lakes, parks and countryside on offer right on their doorstep.

Suitable for all ages, abilities and interests all trails are free of charge but booking is essential – and with five different trails on offer you will be spoilt for choice!

For cycle enthusiasts check out the Craigavon Mountain Bike Trail which will take place at Craigavon Watersports Centre from 2pm to 4pm. This is a 6.5 mile circular route following the natural contours around Craigavon Lakes, meandering through the broadleaf woodlands and wildflower meadows of the park’s natural habitat. The trail is a challenging and scenic riding experience and is suitable for all cyclists with basic off-road riding skills.

Or if you prefer to explore on foot you can enjoy the beauty of Craigavon Lakes with a guided three mile walk, following the shoreline. This walk begins at 2pm at the Watersports Centre.

A stroll around Lurgan Park could be just what you are looking for on a Sunday afternoon so why not sign up to their walk of discovery? Take in the awesome surroundings of Northern Ireland’s largest urban park while learning interesting facts about the nature of the park and Lurgan town itself. The walk will take place from 2pm to 4pm.

Or if a walk on the wild side is more your thing then sign up the event at Oxford Island Nature Reserve. This walk will take you through a variety of wildlife habitats and onto the famous Discovery Bird Hide. On the way you will learn interesting facts about the history, heritage and conservation of Lough Neagh and the many plants and species that reside there. Meet at Lough Neagh Discovery at 1pm.

Finally, for history buffs, the Historical Town Tour is just the event for you. As part of the Lurgan 400 celebrations, Craigavon Museum Services will take you on a tour of Lurgan Town Centre and will tell you stories of the buildings within the town, the historical growth of Lurgan, the Linen Industry and the Brownlows. This tour will take place from 2pm to 4pm. Meet at the PSNI station side of the war memorial in Lurgan Town centre.
