Police in G District, which includes the Foyle and Limavady areas, are reminding licensees of their responsibilities ahead of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

PSNI Licensing Officer Constable Paul Larkin said while the vast majority of licensees operated safely and responsibly right across the District, there are a few that ignored the licensing laws.

“With the St Patrick’s Day events, a number of sporting fixtures still to come and Test Purchasing now in operation across Northern Ireland, now is a good time to remind staff of their responsibilities,” he said.

Among the points he highlighted was the ‘Challenge 21’ initiative, the aim of which is to protect licenced premises and ensure young people under 18 years of age were not sold alcohol.

Constable Larkin also appealed to those selling alcohol to ensure those who appeared to be drunk were not sold alcohol, and encourage premises to plan ahead for any anticipated or spontaneous increase in customer numbers ensuring adequate door and bar staff were available.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring premises were not overcrowded, and encouraged landlords to think about how they could minimise any disturbance to any nearby business or residential areas with regard to noise and disruption at closing time.

“Please ensure that you avoid any form of irresponsible drinks promotions, especially those that encourage excessive consumption of alcohol and binge drinking,” he said, adding: “Make early contact with your local police to discuss any concerns that you might have regarding upcoming events. Early communication with licensees, staff and police may assist in resource planning and resolve any potential problems or difficulties. Please note that police will be conducting licensing checks over the St Patrick’s day period.”
