Enjoy the arts this weekend in Wallace Park

THIS weekend there is an abundance of artistic talent on display in Wallace Park alongside the ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ so why not come along and enjoy this family event.

Lisburn City Council is partnering with local crafters including Colin McGookin, Katie Blue, Jim Russell, Anne Quail and Stitch ‘n’ Bitch on Saturday July 30 from 2.00pm-4.00pm. Sunday July 31 will see Baillies Mills Accordion Band play a short concert in the newly refurbished bandstand.

Councillor Thomas Beckett, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, speaking about the forthcoming weekend, said: “This weekend will see an abundance of colourful materials being worked into artistic sculptures by professionals.

“However, while the professionals will be demonstrating their talent everyone will have the opportunity to get involved and make themselves a souvenir to take home.

“Jim Russell will be creating plasticine sculptures, Anne Quail will be making felt products, Colin McGookin will be running kite making workshops and Katie Blue will be recycling Coca Cola bottles into flowers.”

The local social knitting circle, Stitch ‘n’ Bitch will also be undertaking ‘knit graffiti’ in Wallace Park throughout the day. This is a modern phenomenon where guerrilla knitters display public cheerful art in the form of crochet, embroidery and quilting; it is definitely a sight worth seeing.

Baillies Mills Accordion Band has been entertaining audiences for over 70 years and this professional band will be playing Ulster-Scots associated music on Sunday July 31 from 3.00pm – 4.00pm.
