Enterprise Barge is open to public

THE Enterprise Barge Restoration Project undertaken by Craigavon Museum Services is open to the public – so come on down to Waterside House at Oxford Island and see the transformation.

The Enterprise Barge is a Lough Neagh sand barge which was built around 1900. The restoration project has been in the pipeline for a few years but work officially started on the restoration in November 2009.

The exterior of the barge has been fully refurbished and stands impressively at 18.6m high and 4.25m in size – and has to be seen to be believed!

Work has included clearing out the inside of the barge, sand blasting both inside and outside to remove old paint, dirt and rust then re-painting, removing any steel work beyond repair and putting on a new roof.

Work is continuing to transform the inside of the barge into a permanent exhibition space telling the history of the barge through objects, artefacts and panels. And anyone with any information about the social history associated with the barge and those who worked on it are urged to get in touch with their stories.

“The renovation of the barge has been spectacular to say the least,” said Councillor Mary McAlinden, Chair of the Leisure Services Committee.

“When you see how the barge used to look and how it looks now it’s hard to believe it is the same boat!

"A lot of hard work has went into the restoration of the barge and we are very proud to have it now permanently situated as an extra attraction for people visiting Oxford Island. Work will be continuing on the exhibition inside the barge and we hope to officially launch the barge later in the year, however, it is open to the public so come along and be amazed!”

This restoration project is being funded by DCAL, the Heritage Council, NITB Tourism Development Scheme and Craigavon Borough Council.

The barge is open during the opening hours of Waterside House, Oxford Island which are Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. Anyone with information to include in the exhibition can call 3834 1635 or email at [email protected]
