Enterprising pupils take part in ‘Our City’ course

Primary five pupils at Edenderry Primary School have been showing their enterprising side at a recent Young Enterprise course.

The pupils recently completed the ‘Our City’ Young Enterprise NI programme.

They were presented with certificates by Banbridge District Council Chairman, Councillor Marie Hamilton at a special ceremony on Tuesday 24 March.

The five week programme to teach young people the importance of successful enterprise was delivered in a voluntary capacity by two officers from Banbridge District Council – Karen McKinstry, Tourism Facilities Manager, and Amanda Mulholland, Policing and Community Safety partnership (PCSP) Manager.

Councillor Hamilton commented, “The young people had worked hard both individually and in groups to complete the five week programme.

“It was clear that they had enjoyed all the sessions – from discussing how a city develops and the services that it offers, to setting up a restaurant and compiling a newspaper.

“It was a great opportunity to explain my role and responsibilities as Chairman of Banbridge District Council.

“And also to talk about the roll these young people can play as local citizens.

“I’m delighted that Banbridge District Council has been able to support the delivery of this programme through the voluntary activity of its officers.

“I hope that the new Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council will continue to support the delivery of this valuable programme.”

Helen Fitzpatrick, Development Manager for Young Enterprise NI, added, “It’s never too early to teach children enterprise skills.

“No matter what field or career students will choose in the future, knowing how business works will give them a head start on their peer group. 

“We are delighted to see volunteers from Banbridge District Council bringing our programmes to life in the classroom, volunteers are invaluable to our work at Young Enterprise, and we extend our thanks to them for delivering the ‘Our City’ programme.”

The P5 pupils also got to meet local police officers who kindly brought a liveried police car and police motorbike into the school following the presentation of the certificates.
