The discovery, which was made last Monday, is said to be similar to other waste deposits uncovered in south and east Tyrone.

A spokesperson for NIEA said: “The waste uncovered was on private land and was both buried and surface deposited. There was some evidence of medical waste, however the vast majority of waste uncovered was commercial and household mixed waste.”

NIEA said it is now working to determine the precise volumes of waste and to identify who is responsible for its production, transport and deposit.

”Given recent deposits uncovered we are particularly interested in hearing from anyone with information about illegal waste activity in the border areas of Aughnacloy, Augher, Clougher and Fivemiletown and also in east Tyrone,” they added.

“Anyone who has information about the illegal transport or deposit of waste should contact the NIEA on 028 9056 9458 or by e-mail. Information provided will be treated confidentially.”
