Alan cheers on bloom campaign

THIS week, members of the community along with Coleraine Borough Council will be meeting and greeting judges from the prestigious ‘Britain in Bloom’ Awards scheme.

Following the success earlier this year from the ‘Ulster in Bloom’ competition, the submission for this year’s entry to gain a Britain in Bloom award is the highlight of the season.

Every year, a resident is invited to support the borough in taking the entry forward by showcasing exactly what has been achieved throughout the year with the number of partners involved in submitting the high level entry.

BBC Radio Ulster presenter, Alan Simpson, kindly agreed that he would be this year’s face for the borough’s front cover of the BinB Portfolio, which provides judges with the background to all the projects achieved to improve the local environment, ultimately improving the health and well being of those who live in the area, as well as those who come to visit.

Mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley, said, “Council has won a number of prizes and awards in recognition of the work and services being provided to the local residents.

“The Britain in Bloom competition is a great acknowledgement to the work and dedication of all those who work in partnership to address the environment in which we live. Primary school children have been making a great impact, while volunteers have been helping to clear up the local river and nearby park areas.”

Causeway Volunteer Bureau is just one of the partners who have been working on a number of projects to clean up a number of sections within the borough.

Lilian Watson from CVNI located in Coleraine said, “Members of the CVNI are looking forward to meeting the Britain in Bloom judges and hope to show the high standard of community participation and conservation in Coleraine. We also hope to receive more awards after last year’s fantastic results.”

Mayor Bradley continued: “The competition is about receiving recognition for what has been achieved. I greatly appreciate everyone’s contribution no matter how large or small, it all goes towards improving where we live.

“Also, it importantly impacts on those who visit the area and whether they stay overnight and by supporting our local shops and businesses. The competition has a wide impact on the area as a whole and I look forward to the announcement in the coming months”
