Ballytober P7 pupils visit River Ridge

The P7 classroom of Bushmills Ballytober Primary School took on a very different look, when they visited one of Northern Irelands most advanced materials recovery facilities and waste management companies, RiverRidge Recycling. Eleven pupils were given a short brief on recycling and the company, before donning their high visibility vests and hard hats, and looking at how the state of the art transfer station separates different materials for recycling. The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) sort’s materials collected from businesses, households and schools across the North West and segregates product found in our waste streams for recycling or reuse.

Mr Tony Kirkpatrick, Operations Director said, “We were delighted to welcome the pupils from Ballytober Primary School and appreciated them having taken the time out to come and visit. Waste and what we do with it is one of the biggest environmental challenges facing us today and sending our rubbish to landfill sites is not the best environmental option. Everyone can reduce the impact they have on the environment and we would urge all schools in the area to learn how they can assist and recycle more.”

Mrs Elaine Anderson, Principal of Ballytober said, “This was a wonderful and extremely informative experience for the children. We’ve really enjoyed our visit to RiverRidge Recycling as the children had just completed working on a recycling project in school, so they were absolutely delighted to have a chance to visit a recycling facility. Being able to see and experience the Materials Recovery Facility in real life is a great way to enhance the lessons we’ve been teaching around reducing, reusing and recycling in the classroom and puts everything in context for them.”
