Bonds Street new play area is targeted

VANDALS have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the play area off Bonds Street at Roulston Avenue, in the Waterside.

Police in Foyle have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch. Last year young trees in the area were snapped in half and killed.

Members of Bonds Street Community Association said they were seeking a meeting with officers in the City Council to discuss the vandalism, which occurred some time in or around last weekend, in which around £500 worth of plants and shrubs were uprooted and scattered about the park.

The vandalism was described as “disgusting” by community worker Lloyd Magee, who said: “About 70 plants had been planted at a cost of up to £500 and now everything has been torn up. We are disgusted by this,” he said, continuing: “We cannot understand the mentality of those who pull plants up and start throwing them about the street. We have contacted the wardens and asked them to give the park some more attention.

“This is very disheartening for the whole community that a lovely park has been pulled apart. I would appeal to anyone who knows anything to inform the police or go to the wardens. We have put leaflets through the doors locally so peopole should have the numbers.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Waterside Neighbourhood Team is appealing for information after damage was caused to plants at a playpark in Roulston Avenue. The damage was reported to police on July 18, but may have been caused sometime over the weekend. Anyone with information about who was responsible is asked to contact the Team on 07825 013908 or email [email protected].

Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
