Mid and East Antrim Borough Council says the trial measure, which started yesterday (Wednesday), is “working well”.

Problems arose due to the high volume of people using the service following the reopening of the household recycling centre, which had been closed during the pandemic lockdown. The site is on a shared laneway and staff had noted at peak times issues with vehicles accessing both the centre and surrounding businesses.

In an update, council said: “All residents who pre-booked turned up on time, gained access to the site immediately and were really helpful to our staff.

“The introduction of the booking system on a trial basis has improved our service to residents and assisted other business users on the lane.

“Please remember, those accessing the site will need to provide their vehicle registration to book an appointment and photographic ID will be required on arrival.

“We will continue to work the local businesses to find a longer-term solution for our citizens and business customers.

“We thank you for your patience and continued cooperation.”

If you need to make a booking, council phone lines are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm where residents will be provided with an appointment date and time during the call.
