The bridge has been proposed for the River Bann at the Bannfoot across the Colmcille however some residents had objected.

SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly met recently senior officials of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council to discuss the proposal.

Mrs Kelly said: “I recognise that there is some local opposition to the erection of a cycle bridge from people living in the Banfoot area, we need to hear their concerns and seek to address them. That’s why I have suggested that Council staff through their Good Relations Team conduct a survey.”

Cllr Declan McAlinden added: “In order to access the Department of Infrastructures Greenway Fund an application must come from the local Council that is why I was so disappointed that the SDLP’s motion tabled almost 2years ago, failed to receive all party support.

“The SDLP is committed to this project, it will have huge benefit for the entire area and meets Minister Nichola Mallon’s departmental objectives of enabling active and sustainable travel.”

Mrs Kelly said: “Along with my council colleagues we will be trying to find a solution that can be supported by all parties on delivering a Bridge over the Banfoot and enhancing the whole Borough.”

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Council were asked for a comment on Mrs Kelly’s statement and said: “In relation to the below (press release from Mrs Kelly), the response is no comment.”

The Residents Association at Charlestown close to the Bannfoot were also asked for a comment but declined.
