Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has agreed to provide additional funding to the Sperrins Partnership Project.

A report to members, at a Leisure and Development Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 18, approved increasing the funding, starting April 2025, from the current £22,000 per annum to £28,000 per annum over a period of two years, in £3,000 increments.

An officers’ report also requested extending the period of funding from April 2026 until March 2027.

Officers reminded members the project was a collaboration between the council, Derry City and Strabane District Council, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Mid Ulster District Council, who committed to equal financial contribution towards delivery in 2018.

“Project activity is overseen by a project officer and part time administrative support who took up their respective roles in October 2020,” the report added. “Derry City and Strabane District Council agreed to lead on the recruitment and employment of the officers in agreement with the partner councils.

“At the February 2023 meeting of Leisure and Development Committee it was recommended that council provides financial support for the continuation of the Sperrins Partnership Project at a cost of £22,000 annually, subject to confirmation of the reciprocal financial contribution of all partner councils.

“Officers recommended a three-year term up until 31 March 2026, a decision ratified by full council.

“A recent review of project activities and projected salary costs over the next three years has revealed that the current contribution allocation will not be sufficient going forward.

“The project states that the increased funding will be vital to ensure that it can deliver on its vision as outlined at the Sperrins Future Search Conference.”
