Council pursues two fly tippers

CRAIGAVON Borough Council is appealing for people to come forward if they recognise this sofa, fridge or indeed have an idea of who dumped 70 tyres in the Lurgan countryside.

The Council takes a zero tolerance approach on all types of littering handing out 1,038 fixed penalty fines last year which was the second highest in Northern Ireland.

However, it is a never ending battle.

“Someone actually dumped this sofa close to New Line’s recycling centre,” said Environmental Manager Trevor Clydesdale, “they obviously didn’t know about Council’s bulky waste service.

“Then we have the 70 tyres dumped on a lane of the Ballynery North Road Lurgan and the fridge which our recycling centres actually take.

“Council removes all this material but this is at a cost to the Craigavon ratepayer. We encourage people to report environmental crime in Craigavon by following the link below.”

Council have just approved an increase in fines from £50 to between £75 and £80 effective from April – reiterating that if you litter in Craigavon it will be a costly offence.
