Council staff say goodbye to paper cups for cold drinks

CRAIGAVON Borough Council staff have waved goodbye to paper cups and embraced new reusable plastic tumblers in an effort in cut both costs and waste at Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre.

Last year over 30,000 paper cups were used at the water fountains in the Civic Centre. This waste accounts for a large percentage of the waste disposal from staff offices.

In a bid to cut waste and save money and resources, reusable plastic tumblers for cold drinks have now been supplied to all members of staff. This is an excellent way to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and cut recycling costs.

Chair of the Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Johnny McGibbon, said: “Paper cups are an expensive unsustainable option and staff are keen to lead the way by demonstrating how money can be saved and recycling targets met by making this key change over.”
