Extra litter bins for Carrickfergus harbour area

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has provided additional rubbish bins in the Carrickfergus harbour area following complaints about littering.

A spokesperson for the local government authority said:"Council has four litter bins installed along the harbour area, which are scheduled to be emptied twice daily, seven days a week for the next four weeks. After the initial four-week period, the collection schedule will be reviewed.

“Waste supervisors will continue to monitor the area, which regularly experiences high visitor numbers, particularly during periods of good weather.

"No fixed penalties have been issued in this area for littering.”

The issue was highlighted recently by Carrickfergus councillors Marc Collins and Cheryl Johnston after "numerous reports of bins overflowing and excess litter in the area", according to East Antrim DUP.

"David Hilditch MLA also met council staff on site with Cllr Collins and Cllr Johnston to discuss the issue," the party said.

"Now that the extra bins have been installed we will continue to lobby council to amend the bin emptying rota to ensure that all bins are being emptied regularly and that they are not left to overflow.

"Our thanks go to the council staff who continue to empty the bins and maintain the area as best they can with minimal resources."
