Have a merry and green Christmas

With a phenomenal amount of extra waste generated over the festive period it is vital that recycling doesn’t take a back seat over the holidays.

Wrapping paper, food packaging, cards and trees all create more waste over Christmas than at any other time of the year – and much of this can be recycled at the Fairgreen Recycling Centre, Portadown and Newline Recycling Centre, Lurgan and of course through the green and brown bins.

“Each and every one of us can do a number of small things that can really make a difference in the race against waste this Christmas,” commented Councillor Johnny McGibbon, Chair of the Environmental Services Committee.

“Your green bin can be used for all the wrapping paper and cards and the extra tin cans and plastic bottles that may be used over the festive period. And if you do find that you have a lot of excess material then remember to use the Recycling Centres or one of the 18 glass bottle banks across the Borough.

“I’d also like to thank the people of Craigavon for embracing recycling so well throughout the year. The effort local residents have made to recycle their waste has seen the Council achieve a recycling rate of over 40% which is fantastic.”

The recycling centres accept paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, tins and cans, metal, motor oil, cooking oil, green waste, household and car batteries, televisions and computer monitors and fridges, freezers and cookers and small electrical items such hair straighteners.

The centres will be closed on Monday, December 26, opening as normal on Tuesday, December 27.
