Lakeside shelter is to be replaced

The lakeside shelter in Drum Manor Forest Park is to be replaced within the next year.

After contacting the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Rural Affairs, Keith Buchanan MLA welcomed the confirmation from the Minister that the lakeside shelter is to be replaced.

A place familiar to many within the Mid Ulster constituency, the small lakeside shelter was destroyed by vandals in 2015.

In correspondence with Minister Edwin Poots’ office, Mr Buchanan outlined the attachment of many within the wider Cookstown area.

“The small lakeside house stood for years and I along with many others remember playing around it as children.

“For decades, the seat has been used by members of the community.”

The small log cabin was a prominent feature of the forest park, located along the main walkway and has been missed by visitors over the last number of years.

“Drum Manor Forest Park is familiar to many and has been a site for walks, games and picnics for generations.

“I welcome confirmation from the Minster and hope the new shelter will be used to create new memories for families in years to come.”

Mr Buchanan has written to the Minister and has proposed a meeting at Drum Manor Forest Park to discuss wider conservation and restoration work at the site.

Mr Buchanan said he is thankful to his party colleague for his swift decision to restore the former shelter and views this action as a welcomed announcement for the people of Mid Ulster.
